Speed profiles based on real measurements from in-vehicle navigation systems

European Commission, JRC — Institute for Prospective Technological Studies (IPTS)

The objective of this project is the provision of a database of measured travel speeds on the whole European road network based on real data. The method of capture of the data can include conventional measures (e.g. road counts) or the application of advanced information technologies such as GPS or in-vehicle navigation system traces. The set of speed data must be expressed in the format of speed profiles, i.e. they should represent the share of the free flow speed that the average speed on a specific network link corresponds to, for each 5-minute period over a 7-day period, for the whole 24 hours each day. The data must be presented in an aggregate and anonymous way for each road link. A suitable digital map that allows the representation in a geographic information system application of the whole road network covered by the speed data must be also provided. This network must be in the form of a vector shapefile and must use the same coding as the links included in the speed dataset.
