Work-related diseases — 3 reviews of research, policy and practice on rehabilitation and return-to-work after cancer, work-related diseases caused by biological agents, and sentinel and alert systems in OSH

European Agency for Safety and Health at Work

This EU-OSHA project — covering 3 sub-projects — aims to carry out a comprehensive review of existing knowledge relevant to work-related diseases through desk research and qualitative research in the field, including case studies. The research will cover 3 different areas:
— instruments and practices to raise awareness and provide guidance at the enterprise level,
— reviews that are directed to specific groups of diseases with a common exposure or common effects,
— methodologies for identifying and monitoring adverse exposures and ill health.
Regarding instruments and practices, building on EU-OSHA work on rehabilitation and work health promotion and the multiannual activity on older workers, a review on rehabilitation and back-to-work measures for workers affected by cancer should provide more insight into the problems encountered by workers and employers, and provide recommendations for enterprises building on examples of policies in place.
A review directed at diseases caused by biological agents in the workplace will provide an overview with a specific focus on unintentional exposures and emerging diseases in new professions.
Regarding methodologies for monitoring, a review will focus on the use of alert and sentinel systems to identify work-related ill health and support evidence-based prevention.
