Supply of a centrifuge and guiding tube.
Operating under vacuum, the centrifuge will accelerate pellets of cryogenic hydrogen ice which are dropped into its centre. The pellets must be guided from the centrifuge exit using a guide tube, also under vacuum.
Among others the system has interfaces with the pellet sources, flight speed measurement unit and overall control system.

To enhance system reliability and to extend the system’s operational lifetime additional tests related to the bearing of the rotating blade and the associated eigenmodes of the centrifuge system became necessary during contract implementation.

In particular a characterization of the system, a seismic test and a set of endurance tests are added to the original scope: 1. Characterization of the centrifuge with focus on resonant frequencies potentially damaging the components and limiting the specified operational range. The aim is a root cause analysis of the issues encountered during pre-tests and related to resonance. 2. Implementation of a temperature sensor which is permanently monitoring the temperature of the vacuum bearing in order to protect it from overheating. 3. Seismic tests of the centrifuge representing relevant seismic event during operation. 4. Endurance tests of the centrifuge ensuring that the system can reliably be operated fulfilling all necessary parameters over the expected time frame in the JT-60SA tokamak. The cost impact of this deviation amounts to EUR 320,000, which is 29% of the initial contract value.
